What Size Shed Do I Need Florida
Copy Link
The number one thing people tell us after their shed is built: “I wish I had gone bigger.”
Every single time. Without fail. They see the finished shed, love it – and then within six months they’re back on the phone asking about a second one.
Here’s how to avoid that.
Start With What You’re Actually Storing
Before you pick a size, make a list. Not a mental list – an actual list. Write down everything going in the shed. Then add 30%. Because once you have a dedicated storage space, you always find more to fill it.
Common items and how much space they need:
- Holiday decorations (average family): 20–30 cubic feet
- Riding lawnmower: 6–8 feet of floor space
- Push mower: 2–3 feet
- Bicycles: 2 feet each
- Patio furniture set: 6–10 feet
- Garden tools, rakes, shovels: 4 feet of wall space
- Workbench: 8–10 feet of wall space
Common Sizes – And What They Actually Cost
Here are the most popular sizes we build, with real prices including installation:
10×12 (120 sq ft) – $4,790 – Our most popular size. Fits a riding mower, tools, and seasonal items. Starts to feel tight within a year for most families.
10×16 (160 sq ft) – $5,790 – A step up that most customers are glad they took. Room to actually move around inside.
12×16 (192 sq ft) – $6,490 – The sweet spot for Central Florida homeowners. Fits everything comfortably. This is what we recommend when people ask.
12×20 (240 sq ft) – $7,990 – Workshop territory. Full workbench, large equipment, and room to actually work.
12×24 (288 sq ft) – $9,790 – Serious storage or a dedicated hobby space.
Want a Barn Style (Gambrel) with loft space? Prices start at $4,690 for an 8×8 and go up from there. The gambrel roof gives you extra overhead storage without adding to the footprint.
Florida-Specific Considerations
Go bigger for power tools and equipment. Florida humidity will rust anything that sits in a pile without space between items. Proper storage extends the life of everything you own.
Think about airflow. Bigger sheds can have windows on both sides for cross-ventilation – a massive difference on a Florida summer afternoon.
Permit thresholds matter. In some counties, keeping your shed under a specific size saves you the permit process entirely. A 10×14 (140 sq ft) instead of a 10×16 (160 sq ft) might qualify for an exemption in Lake County or Hillsborough County. Call us and we’ll advise for your specific address. See permit info by county
The One Rule We Always Give Customers
If you’re deciding between two sizes, always go with the bigger one. The difference in price between a 12×16 and a 12×20 is about $1,500. The regret of going too small lasts for years.
